The new console, which is internally known as the K-variant, is no longer capable of hd over the component output to send. This is true for both games and blu-ray movies. The memo also reports that all the older PlayStation 3 models, their functionality is retained.

The change probably has to do with the new license from the aacs-encryption used in the encryption of blu-ray movies. The new terms prohibit the export of hd material on non-hdmi connections.
