Carmack: phones match within two years of the Xbox 360 and PS3

John Carmack, programmer and co-founder of id Software, thinks that mobile devices within two years, be as powerful as the current generation of consoles. In the market for games to grow both channels for the time being though still next to each other.

“Within a very short time we shall undoubtedly mobile phones that even more powerful than the current generation of consoles,” says John Carmack in an interview with Industry Gamers. “People, however, have exaggerated expectations. The iPad 2 is still several times weaker than the Xbox 360, but that it is so soon in the near has come, it means that there are almost certainly within two years, mobile devices that are more powerful than the machines which we now all those great games.”

The programmer of id Software, is surprised by the rapid development: “That is one of the things that we do internally a lot of talk. It is almost unimaginable that iOS didn’t exist when we Rage started. There was no iPhone. That whole development has occurred in the development time of one project. That is what is frightening, because a landslide can thus take place while we are on one project work,” says Carmack.

He thinks not, incidentally, that the power of the next generation of mobile devices represents a threat for the traditional big budget games, like id Software who makes. According to Carmack sell the traditional pc and console games better than ever, despite the huge success of mobile games like Angry Birds. “It thus seems to be a parallel growth and it does not seem likely that both currents from each other steal. As a platform I can, however, future proposals in which, instead of a console, a mobile device that talks to your tv and if you like the experience, then switch over to the big screen and the 5.1 sound still come from the same device,” thinks the programmer.
