Epic Games shows Unreal Engine 4 later this year for the first time

According to Mark Rein, vice president of Epic Games, we get later this year the first demonstration of Unreal Engine 4. Programmer Tim Sweeney, however, thinks that the first games with the new engine until 2014 appear.

Rein and Sweeney spoke at DICE 2012 about the future of their much licensed game engine. Pure left it loose that version 4 for the first time later this year, will be shown. Sweeney signed later, however, that it is still up to 2014 will take before the first games to appear that are made with the engine.

About the technical specifications of Unreal Engine 4 showed no of both. Sweeney went on in his speech in on the future of the technical aspect of games, but kept it at a general story about the achievement of photorealism in games. Sweeney suspects that about 2000 times as much computing power is needed as the present systems have in order to be a ‘perfect’ image. So the framerate up; the human eye can take up to 72 frames per second to perceive, while the image in the contemporary games are only 60 frames displayed per second.

In computer terms this means, according to Sweeney that 5000 teraflops are needed to make a photo-realistic image. That is far from the current reality removed, according to the programmer. For the Samaritan demo that Epic in 2011 showed, were of 2.5 teraflops needed. Sweeney stated that the Xbox 360 is capable of 0.25 teraflops, which is to say that the successor of the Xbox 360 is ten times as powerful should be to get the Samaritan demo to run.

About the next console from Microsoft are already doing a lot of rumours. The expectation is that Microsoft made the console during the E3 of this year is going to present. The heart of the console would be formed by a Radeon HD 6670 and the console would be six times as powerful as the current Xbox 360.
