Samsung Mobile Display and Corning, maker of Gorilla Glass, have set up a joint venture for the production of special glassubstraten for oled-screens for mobile devices. The joint venture, headquartered in South Korea.
The new, as yet unnamed joint venture, will include the glassubstraten provide for the so-called backplane for oled displays. The transistors are directly on the moederglas of Corning confirmed.
Corning will provide the technology for the production of the glassubstraten. The Lotus Glass, an improved version of the current Gorilla Glass.
Lotus Glass is stronger and krasvaster than the previous generation and is also resistant to higher temperatures than Gorilla Glass. With the new glass substrate may be thinner or curved screens can be created. Lotus Glass can also handle both ltps-tft as oxide tft for the backplane. Currently, Samsung is still using the first variant.
The company will include the glassubstraten for oled screens in mobile phones deliver. But will also the joint-venture deal with larger substrates for more tablets and tvs. As announced by Samsung at the recent CES show in Las Vegas a 55″-oled-tv, which from the summer will come.
Samsung Mobile Display will be a major customer of the oled glassubstraten, but the company will also supply to other producers in Korea. Probably will LG also of the party. That manufacturer has just like Samsung at CES 2012 a 55″-oled-tv announced.
The current Gorilla Glass is in a large number of mobile devices used. So, Samsung does its use in the Galaxy S smartphones and Galaxy Tab tablets, while Sony, the glass applied in some Bravia lcd tv models as a strong top layer.
