Opensourcedriver for ARM’s Mali-gpu in development

An open-source project aims to reverse engineering a graphics driver for Mali-gpus from ARM chips to come. The project will be in February at a meeting for developers in Belgium lwa officially unveiled.

Drivers that are fully open source for the gpu’s paired with ARM chips are not there yet, but may is going to change that. The company CodeThink, and in particular, Luc Verhaegen prove namely the driving force behind a project for the reverse engineering of the graphics driver for the Mali-gpu. Verhaegen is X. org-developer and former developer of Suse.

The project focuses on the Mali-400 with support for OpenGL 2.0 and the Mali-200 OpenGL ES 1.1/2.0 and OpenVG 1.1 support. CodeThink hopes that the company ARM itself is involved in the project. There is still much to be done before the first result released can be, but according to Phoronix is the project now is already more than the attempt of the Free Software Foundation to the PowerVR driver to reverse-engineer. At the FOSDEM meeting in early February in Brussels makes Verhaegen more is known about the project.
