Researchers printing bones with a 3-d printer

Researchers have a 3d printer used to make bone print. The artificial beenmateriaal can be used for surgery or in dentistry. Moreover, it can be used as medicine.

The group of scientists of the Washington State University made use of a commercially available 3d printer for their experiment. They modificeerden a ProMetal 3-D printer, which normally is used for printing of metal objects, to the bone material to be printed. The print head brought a 20 µm thin layer of polymer to a calciumfosfaatpoeder. In this way, accumulated cylinders were then for a week in a bath with young human bone cells placed.

After a week, the tubes botachtig become and would not by the body must be disposed of. They could thus be used as building blocks to bone to stimulate growth, for example for reconstructions. In addition, the researchers suggest in the long term, a ct-scan of a problem area in a patient to be able to make and on the basis of a print job can be generated in the bone material to be printed.
