Chrome-extension adds opt-out of Facebook permissions

A developer has an extension for Chrome that users have more control over permissions for Facebook applications. The requested permissions can be disabled in the autorisatiescherm.

Developer Chad Selph has an extension developed for Google Chrome that allows Facebook users to gain more control over what level of access to their profile they give to Facebook apps. The extension, preliminary OOptOut called, makes it possible to almost all permissions for apps to disable it in the autorisatiescherm.

Facebook offers are privacy settings also the ability to modify permissions of apps. This only applies to optional permissions, and permission can only be revoked after an application has already been granted access. Selph warns that not all apps take into account the possibility that they requested data is not given and therefore may not function properly after using OOptOut.

The extension is not yet finished and therefore not yet published in the Chrome Web Store. Selph is still looking for a better name and a logo before the publication wants to proceed. Until that time, the extension from GitHub, downloading and using the developer mode of the browser to install. A port to Firefox is also in development.

Update 4/12: The extension is now available in the Chrome Web Store.
