Mexicans demonstrate against gay marriage

The head of state, Enrique Peña Nieto wants the same-sex will be allowed marriage in the whole country. In contrast, hundreds of thousands of Mexicans took to the streets.

At the rallies, both Catholics and members of other denominations, such as Methodists and Mormons, took part. “Dad + mom = Happy family”, on a poster at a Demonstration in Puebla, with around 3000 participants.

In the Eastern state of Veracruz, as well as in the border city of Ciudad Juárez, there were protest actions. According to the organizers, 300,000 people were on the street. The National Front for the family, a coalition of conservative religious groups had called. For the 24. September is planned a large Demonstration in the capital, Mexico city.

In some places, opponents and supporters faced off literally

The previous ban is unconstitutional

In the past year, the Supreme court of justice of the majority Catholic country, had ruled that the ban on same-sex marriages was unconstitutional. Registered partnerships of homosexual couples had been allowed in 2007 – for the first time in the whole of Latin America – in Mexico city. Two years later, the Homo was introduced in marriage. Since then, only three of the 31 Mexican Federal States followed.

President Enrique Peña Nieto announced in may of this year that he wants to change Mexico’s Constitution so that gay can be introduced marriage across the country. The social Democrat is currently under pressure. He’s fighting against
a weak economy, drugs, crime, and the sharp criticism of the visit to the
Republican U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump, and led to his longtime Confidant and Minister of Finance, Luis Videgaray was giving up his office.
