Researchers test contact lens with built-in display

Researchers have a crystalline lens is developed that is a very small display. The display has currently a very low resolution, of just completed. n pixel. The lenses are for the first time successfully tested on the eyes of rabbits.

Lenses like a contact lens on the eye and a display and other electronics contain, have already been developed. A group of researchers from the Finnish Aalto university and the American university of Washington have, however, a contact lens, developed successfully on one eye is tested, in this case, in anesthetized rabbits. The eyes were not damaged by the lenses and the wireless energy source proved to work. The lenses, with only one active pixel, could to distance of energy and control signals may be provided.

The group of researchers led by Babak Parviz developed the lens so that the eye can be worn. In the longer term, an integrated display of information to the carrier must provide, that the lens as augmented reality tool would serve. In the shorter term, the hearing impaired, the lens can be used for alerts, even with the single active pixel which is now realized.

The lens was made by a specially developed led-pixel behind a fresnel lens. That lens is needed to get the pixel sharp on the retina project. The diode is driven by electronics that are energy wireless receive. An annular antenna captures rf energy into the contact lens sent. In the eye can the rf source to two inches away successfully energy transfer, just enough distance to the electronics wireless to provide energy.

The contact lenses act yet as a proof-of-concept. For a practical application, the things the researchers want the antenna system to optimize, so that more energy transfer over greater distances is possible. They also want to multipixelsystemen work and green leds to develop; yet were the blue and red pixels are used.
