Intel has with the introduction of its Sandy Bridge E-series processors, the successor of X58 platform on the market. The cpus to be put into motherboards with the X79 chipset in a lga2011 socket with 2011 pins.
The Sandy Bridge E-series, also known as the second generation of Core i7 Extreme processors, with the introduction available in two variants; early in 2012 a third type available. The first two Core i7 processors with the Sandy Bridge, the Core i7-3960X and the 3930K. Both cpus have six cores on board with support for hyperthreading. The cpu’s are both unlocked, so the clock speed can be easily increased. The 3960X is, however, with 3.3 GHz is slightly higher clocked than the 3930K, which is 3.2 GHz tap.
Intel redesigned for Sandy Bridge E, the turbo mode, the clock speed of both cpu’s with 600MHz can perform. The 3960X has 15MB of L3 cache, while the 3930K it with something less, 12MB, need to do. The two processors have a tdp of 130W and with four memory channels, compatible to ddr3 memory with 1600MHz. The Sandy Bridge E cpu’s in motherboards with socket lga2011 put into it.
Motherboard with the lga2011 socket, on board with the X79 chipset, 14 usb 2.0 ports, but no usb 3.0 ports deliver. Also provides the chipset, six sata ports, two sata-600 ports, a gigabitnetwerkpoort and hd audio. Together with the eight pci-express lanes of the chipset and the forty lanes from the processor, there are 48 pci-express lanes available. The cpu and the chipset to communicate with each other via a dmi with 20Gbps bandwidth.
The platform with Sandy Bridge E processors and X79 chipset is the Extreme segment of Intel following the in 2008 introduced X58 platform. The motherboards with the X79 chipset are from about 250 euros available, while the i7-3960X about 900 euro should cost. The i7-3930K is about 450 euros a piece cheap. The in 2012 to introduce a quad-core, the 3.6 GHz geklokte i7-3820, has not yet been awarded.
