‘HP servers with ARM chips release’

HP want servers with ARM cpus, claims Bloomberg. The company would together with Calxeda are working on chips for the servers. ARM processors are indeed effective lwa nter, but generally much less powerful than x86 cpus.

Bloomberg says, on the basis of two anonymous sources to know that HP ARM cpus in servers to use. None of the two companies wants the news from Bloomberg confirm, but according to the agency, works with HP currently working with the start-up Calxeda on ARM-cpu’s for the servers. Chip maker Calxeda, in which ARM is a part owner, has been working longer on ARM cpus for servers.

ARM cpus are much more energy-efficient, but less powerful than x86 cpus. For that reason, they are until now mainly used in devices where energy efficiency is more important than performance. The solution is to have a large number of cores. This is how it works Calxeda to a way of 120 quad-core-ARM-cpu’s to work together, allowing a server on 480 cores might have.
