Battlefield 3 runs at 30 fps on consoles

Developer DICE has via Twitter announced that Battlefield 3 on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 with 30 frames per second runs, with a resolution of 720p. Competitor Modern Warfare 3 runs at 60 frames per second on both consoles.

A spokesman from the Swedish developer Dice gave details about Battlefield 3, the shooter that the this fall, hopes to have. Via two tweets makes the studio announced that the version for the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 runs at 30 frames per second, with a resolution of 720p. The pc version has no restriction and can, therefore, be 1080p and 60 fps. Fans of the game wondered what resolution and frame rate, as the desk version is running, because Dice, the game still shows on the pc. The studio gets a lot of praise for the graphics power of its own Frostbite 2 engine. The question, however, was how the engine would perform on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

The performance of Battlefield 3 will remain behind that of the main competitor, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. The shooter from Infinity Ward is running at 60 frames per second on both consoles. The higher refresh rate makes for a smoother image. Many fans find 30fps too low a frequency for the fast-paced action of shooters like Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3.

Update, 10:35: By the mouth of rendering architect Johan Andersson has Dice already stated why the game at just 30 frames per second runs: “We think huge levels, lots of players, great effects, destruction, vehicles & varied gameplay are more important than 1080p.”
