In a statement, his son Chip Carter describes his father as a hero:
– My father was a hero, not just to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights and selfless love, he says according to the Washington Post.
Jimmy Carter was born in the small town of Plains, Georgia, where he took over the family's farming business before embarking on his political career. He was elected president in 1977 as a Democrat but became one of the few American presidents not to be re-elected.
As president, Carter is perhaps best known for having negotiated the Camp David Accords, which resulted in a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt. After leaving the White House, he devoted himself to humanitarian causes and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. And it is perhaps what he did after he was president that he will be most remembered for.
The reactions to Jimmy Carter's passing have been many. Barack Obama describes him as a role model:
“President Carter taught us all what it means to live a life of grace, dignity and justice,” he writes on X.
Bill and Hillary Clinton have also spoken out:
“President Carter lived to serve others – until the end,” reads their joint statement.
