The decision, which according to Robert Fico was made without consulting the European countries concerned, will, according to him, cause major damage to the EU economy.

“By stopping gas transit, President Zelensky is causing billions in losses for the EU, including Slovakia, and further reducing the Union's competitiveness,” Fico writes on Facebook.

He continues:

“It seems that the big people in the EU have nothing against it. The main thing is that the Slavs continue to kill each other in the unrealistic aim of weakening Russia.”

Fico writes that the EU's support for Ukraine must be rational and not lead to, as he puts it, “self-destructive gestures.” He believes that the proposed solutions to the gas problem have been rejected by Zelensky and that the decision to stop supplies primarily benefits Russia.

Despite all the sanctions, the EU's dependence on Russian energy has increased in 2024. During the first eleven months of the year, Russia exported approximately 50 billion cubic meters of natural gas to Europe, a clear increase of almost 20 percent compared to the previous year. At the same time, Slovakia's Defense Minister Robert Kaliniak emphasizes that the situation on the battlefield does not indicate that Ukraine has any opportunity to regain the territories occupied by Russia. – It is in Slovakia's interest to immediately establish a ceasefire, which could pave the way for peace negotiations, says Kaliniak in an interview with TA3. Fico has previously expressed skepticism about the EU's handling of the conflict and warned that Ukraine risks becoming a victim of the games of the great powers. He has also threatened to cut off Slovakia's electricity supply to Ukraine in response to the gas transit decision.

Volodymyr Zelensky has in turn accused Fico of acting on behalf of Putin by opening a “second front” against Ukraine in the energy field.
