The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon near Humpy Island, an island off the country's northeast coast.
“The man was fishing with his family when he was bitten by a shark,” Queensland state police said.
Despite efforts to save the man's life, he died about an hour and a half after the attack.
A Queensland ambulance spokesman said the man had life-threatening injuries after being bitten in the throat.
The type of fishing the man was doing, such as spearfishing, is still unclear, according to police.
The incident is the latest in a series of shark attacks in Australia. The last fatal incident occurred in December 2023, when a 15-year-old boy lost his life while surfing in the southern part of the country.
