This completes the last formal step required by the German constitution for new elections to be held.
The background to the new elections is the political crisis that erupted in early November when the left-liberal three-party government under Chancellor Olaf Scholz collapsed. The government crisis has shaken the political establishment and left the country in an uncertain situation.
Frank-Walter Steinmeier's decision was expected, but still marks a historic event in German politics. Germany is now preparing for an intense election campaign where the question of the country's future course is at the center – with an intense focus on immigration and the economy.
The new elections on February 23 are expected to be an important temperature gauge on the political landscape in Germany and could lead to major changes in the federal balance of power.
