So far this year, 341 people have been deported and another 1,000 cases are awaiting enforcement, reports SVT Nyheter.
Previously, the crime required at least one year in prison for deportation to be decided. Now, a sentence of six months is sufficient, regardless of whether there is a risk of recidivism. Another change is that people who came to Sweden as children and have lived here for at least five years are no longer exempt from deportation. Of the 1,000 who are waiting to be deported, the majority are still in prison, while 128 people are being held in custody while awaiting deportation. In total, the police have handled 666 cases this year in which criminals have been sentenced to deportation, writes SVT. In addition to deporting convicted criminals, the police also use rules in the Aliens Act to deport and issue re-entry bans to people who pose a threat to public order. This often applies to foreign gangs that specialize in theft of, for example, car parts or valuables. According to the border police, these measures have prevented at least 43,500 crimes this year alone, writes SVT. So far, 225 people have been deported and issued with a re-entry ban.
