Trump suggests in a post on his Truth Social platform that he does not accept China's growing influence over the canal either.
“We would and will NEVER let it fall into the wrong hands,” Trump writes.
The US completed the canal in 1914 and gave it to Panama in 1977. It was not until 1999 that the US handed over full control of the waterway to the local government.
“If the principles, both moral and legal, of this magnanimous gift are not followed, then we will demand that the Panama Canal be returned to us,” Trump writes.
