Foreign Affairs. Austria wants to send home, initially, around 40,000 Syrians. The first step is sending letters from the migration authority BFA, in which Syrian citizens are asked to explain why they still need protection in Austria.

According to the newspaper Profil, the first letters have been sent to Syrians who have been in Austria for less than five years. The authorities claim that they are no longer at risk of political persecution after the change of regime.
The Syrians concerned are asked to prove other reasons for asylum and show that they are integrated, for example through work or schooling for their children, writes Exxpress.
The process could affect up to 40,000 people, and protection status can be revoked by law within five years if circumstances change. However, BFA emphasizes that each case is examined individually and that no decisions are made without a thorough assessment.
Sweden has – unlike Austria – granted Swedish citizenship to four out of five of its Syrian immigrants, which means that they cannot be expelled as long as Sweden remains in the EU and other international cooperation.
