Adults are offered 200,000 Danish kronor, which corresponds to approximately 310,000 Swedish kronor. Each child receives 50,000 Danish kronor, equivalent to 77,000 Swedish kronor.
This is part of the country's repatriation law, which was passed with the aim of reducing the number of third-world immigrants in Denmark.
According to Integration Minister Kaare Dybvad Bek, over 5,100 Syrians have left Denmark since 2015, of which almost 600 have returned to Syria with financial support.
– I hope that more Syrians will take advantage of the offer given the new developments in the region, the minister tells Bild.
According to reports, around 45,000 Syrians live in Denmark, of which 28,000 are adults. If all of them were to take advantage of the repatriation grant, the cost to the Danish state would amount to almost 10 billion Swedish kronor. Despite this, the proposal is seen as significantly more financially sustainable than continuing to finance social benefits, early retirement pensions, etc. for this very costly group.
Similar proposals have sparked debate in Germany. Christian Democratic politician Jens Spahn has proposed free flights and a 1,000 euro start-up grant for Syrians who return voluntarily, but has met with resistance from both party colleagues and trade unions.
