For the ninth year in a row, Sweden is at the top when it comes to research spending.
In total, 3.5 percent of Sweden's total GDP goes to various forms of so-called research and development.
Eurostat's figure includes both socially beneficial research in the business sector and the bill for all academics who work with discourse analysis, gender studies, theory formation, postmodern deconstruction and the like.
When everything is added up, Sweden has had the largest expenditure on research in an uninterrupted sequence since 2015, according to Eurostat.
