The investigation, which was initiated after Mbappé's visit to Stockholm in October, has not led to any interrogations of the 25-year-old Real Madrid star.
– During the course of the investigation, there has been one person identified as reasonably suspected of rape and two cases of sexual assault, but my assessment is that the evidence is not sufficient to proceed and the investigation is therefore being closed. The person named has not been informed of the suspicion of a crime, says senior prosecutor Marina Chirakova in a press release.
The report concerned a rape that allegedly occurred at the exclusive Bank hotel in connection with an after-party where Mbappé was allegedly present. The crime was reported one day after the footballer left Sweden.
Despite Mbappé being a reasonable suspect, which is the lower level of suspicion, no interrogations have been held with him. Chirakova explains that interrogations cannot be carried out without being informed of the suspicion, which has not happened.
The legal representative of the female plaintiff has not wanted to comment on the decision.
Mbappé has consistently denied all allegations. According to the prosecutor, the investigation has followed standard procedures for sexual crime cases.
