Domestic. The government and the Sweden Democrats have now decided to tighten the regulations for party political lotteries after the scandals surrounding the Social Democrats' activities. However, they have opted out of the option of completely stopping licenses for political parties.

– We are one of four parties. We have landed on something we are all happy with and see that it is a good first step, said SD's cultural policy spokesman Alexander Christiansson during a press conference.

SD has previously demanded that the party lotteries be completely banned.

A new legislative council referral proposes clearer requirements for the labeling of lotteries and that party political lotteries must be subject to the same rules as other lotteries – including gambling tax and credit ban.

The proposals, which are expected to come into force on 1 January 2026, mean that all lotteries – both physical and digital – must be labeled with clear information about which party or side organization benefits from the purchase. This must also be stated in the marketing.

The aim is to provide consumers with clear information and to remove unjustified concessions for political parties' gaming activities, according to the Ministry of Finance.

The previous exceptions for party political lotteries, which made them free from gaming tax and bonus restrictions, will be scrapped according to the proposal. The government believes that these exceptions are no longer justified.

The decision comes after an investigation, led by former director general Gunnar Larsson, presented its proposals earlier this year. Two options were presented: to completely abolish licenses for partisan lotteries or to tighten the conditions. The government has therefore chosen the latter.
