US President-elect Donald Trump says he wants to work with the Democrats to find a solution for so-called “Dreamers”, illegal immigrants who are protected by the so-called DACA program.
– I want to develop a plan, but the Democrats have made it very difficult, Trump says about the amnesty plans in an interview with NBC News.
When asked if he wants dreamers to be allowed to stay in the country, he answers:
– I want it. I want to work something out.
Before the election, Trump also talked about greatly increasing so-called legal immigration from the Third World, by giving automatic permanent residency to all foreign students who graduate from American institutions of higher learning.< /p>
DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) was introduced in 2012 by President Barack Obama and gives people who came to the United States illegally as minors the right to live and work in the country for two years at a time, with possibility of extension. Currently, around 535,000 people are covered by the program. No new applications have been approved since 2021, after a court declared it illegal, but this does not affect those already protected by DACA.
In total, however, it is estimated that there are 3.6 million so-called dreamers in the United States who qualify apply for or could qualify for protection under the DACA program if it were fully available.
Donald Trump, meanwhile, has promised “mass deportations” of illegal immigrants. How it will turn out with that matter remains to be seen.
