The study from the Karolinska Institutet and Region Stockholm shows that the percentage who identify as “bisexual” increased from 1.6 percent in 2010 to 3.1 percent in 2021.
At the same time, the percentage of homosexuals has remained relatively stable between 1.7 and 2 percent, reports TT.
The results, which are based on survey responses from 98,000 Stockholm residents over the age of 16, show that the increase is particularly clear among younger generations.
In generation Y , born between the early 1980s and the mid-1990s, 7.8 percent identified as gay or bisexual. In generation Z, born from the mid-1990s to the early 2010s, the proportion is 12 percent.
The study also shows that sexual identity is apparently something that changes over time. Almost 16 percent of the participants “changed” their sexual identity at least once during the study period, mainly from heterosexual to bisexual.
