Domestic. After the regime change in Syria, the Sweden Democrats propose that permanent and time-limited residence permits for Syrians in Sweden be reconsidered. But everyone who has been granted citizenship – which is the vast majority – should be allowed to stay forever, according to the party.

SD's migration policy spokesperson, Ludvig Aspling, argues that refugee status is temporary and that return should take place if the situation in the home country improves.

– Refugeeship is by its nature temporary. It is not meant to automatically allow you to stay for the rest of your life, says Aspling to Aftonbladet.

SD also wants the Migration Agency to pause processing of new asylum applications from Syrians until the situation in the country is clarified.

However, Ludvig Aspling does not want to touch citizenship. They mean that he wants the vast majority of Syrians to stay, as they have already been granted citizenship. This also applies to all descendants of these Syrians.

Between 2013 and July 2024, over 147,000 Syrians were granted Swedish citizenship, which corresponds to approximately 22 percent of all new citizenships during that period. Basically everyone has taken the long way to Sweden with the help of people smugglers to whom they paid large sums of money. The SD-backed government has continued to hand out new citizenships at the same rate as previous governments.

The Green Party's Annika Hirvonen, however, criticizes the new proposal from SD and says it could put people's lives in danger.

– Urging people to go to Syria while Sweden has the strongest travel advice there is serious, she tells Aftonbladet.
