According to the French newspaper Le Monde European leaders are working to find alternative solutions to strengthen Ukraine's security, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy continues to plead for a clear path towards membership.

During a press conference, urged Zelenskyy NATO to give Ukraine a clear message about its future in the alliance.

– Ukraine has fought hard and deserves to receive a clear signal about membership. It's about giving us the motivation we need, he said.

Despite Zelensky's insistent appeal, the US attitude is an important factor in the context.

An anonymous high-ranking American source confirms that the US is against Ukrainian NATO membership and tells Le Monde:

– There are fears that Ukrainian NATO membership would draw the entire alliance into a direct conflict with Russia. It is something we must avoid.

Europe's response to the issue is divided. While some countries express support for Ukraine's aspirations, others advocate more pragmatic solutions.

– We must find a balance between supporting Ukraine and avoiding escalating the conflict. NATO membership may not be the only answer, says “a high-ranking European diplomat” to the French newspaper.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has previously emphasized that Russia has no “veto power” on the question of Ukraine's membership. At the same time, NATO is trying to ensure unity within the alliance before decisions are made.

Ukraine's membership issue is expected to be a central point at upcoming NATO summits, where both security guarantees and the alliance's future strategy will be discussed.
