Law & Right. From the turn of the year, it will once again be illegal to fly foreign flags in Denmark, following a decision by the Folketing. However, the Swedish flag is one of the exceptions.

The background to the change in the law is a court case where a family in Jutland raised the American flag.

The Supreme Court ruled that there was no reason for the authorities to intervene, leading to the repeal of the 1915 ban.

But the government has now, with the support of right-wing parties in the Folketing, pushed through a new regulation.

Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard (S) justifies the law by saying that the Danish flag, the dannebrog, is the country's “most important national symbol” and therefore deserves a special status.

Despite the ban, flags from the Nordic countries – including Sweden, as well as Germany, Greenland and the Faroe Islands – may still be flown in Denmark. Exceptions are also made for demonstrations, sports events and other special circumstances.

The law enters into force on 1 January 2025.

In Sweden, the decision is praised by SD's cultural policy spokesman Alexander Christiansson, who on X writes that Denmark is now showing the way.
