Charles Kushner is a controversial figure with a criminal background that includes convictions for tax crimes, illegal campaign contributions and witness tampering.

He was convicted 2005 to two years in prison. One of the most high-profile crimes was Kushner recording a compromising sex tape of his brother-in-law with a prostitute – a video he then sent to his own sister.

Among the last things Trump did as president last time was to pardon Charles Kushner and a number of other convicted criminals with ties to Jewish and Israeli interests – an act that has become a bit of a tradition for US presidents.

Charles' son, Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, had great influence over Trump's first administration and was allowed to shape the administration's Middle East policy in accordance with Israeli interests. This time he will play a more “informal role” but engage in similar duties.

Donald Trump defends the nomination in a statement on Truth Social, calling Charles Kushner “a brilliant businessman and philanthropist” .

Critics warn, however, that the appointment is yet another example of nepotism that undermines America's credibility in the world.
