Will not propose a ban on international adoptions

– We have not discussed a ban, however, we have discussed how to regulate international adoption in the future. There are many different ways to regulate it, says Anna Singer in SVT's “Agenda”.

One of the options being investigated is to transfer the responsibility for adoptions from private organizations to state management. However, Anna Singer states that the “need” for international adoptions will remain in the future.

The inquiry was appointed in 2021 by the then S-MP government to review irregularities in Swedish adoption activities over the past 70 years. Among other things, it concerns revelations about children who were stolen from their biological parents in countries such as Chile during the 1970s and 1980s.

The commission has identified flaws in previous adoptions, where organizations did not ask sufficient questions or follow up the answers accurately enough. Due to the amount of material collected, the commission has requested that the end date of the investigation be moved forward from March 1 to June 1, 2025.
