Big EU trial against Hungary's anti-pedophile law

EU. The Hungarian anti-pedophile law was enacted in 2021 with the aim of protecting children from being exposed to homo- and transsexual propaganda. A wide-ranging legal case has now been launched at the European Court of Justice against Hungary over the legislation.

The law, passed in 2021, has faced vocal liberal criticism for to restrict sex education, equate LGBTQ people with pedophiles, make it more difficult for homosexuals to adopt and limit content in the media and advertising.

Participating in the legal process 16 member states together with the European Commission, which is more than in previous cases concerning the “rule of law”.

– It is a direct and serious attack on the rule of law and European society in general, said one of the European Commission's lawyers in his opening speech.

If Hungary is convicted, the country risks fines and may also lose its right to vote in the EU. A statement from the court's attorney general is expected within three to four months.
