“God, we pray for the American people, for extended happening in the time to come,” wrote Archbishop Martin Modéus in a Twitter sermon after Donald Trump won the US election.
The post caused a storm and gave rise to many hundreds of angry comments.
The archbishop now announces that he will stop using X and instead shift his focus to other social media such as Instagram and Threads. In doing so, he makes common cause with many other left-wing profiles who are currently boycotting Elon Musk's social media platform.
– We assess that X has played his role for what we think is important – the trusting conversation in society, says Martin Modéus to Kyrkans Tidning.
He now describes X as a platform that contributes to a sharp tone and is “radicalized and radicalizing”.
Martin Modéus further claims that the Twitter prayer was written before the election results came and that it was not intended as a contribution to the political debate.
– People need intercession in a world that is tormented in many ways, regardless of who wins an election, he says.
The Church of Sweden at the national level and its aid activities Act have also chosen to reduce their presence on X and focus on other digital platforms.
Martin Modéu's account on X will not be deleted, but it will clearly to be clear that no longer updated, according to the Church's newspaper.
