Two underwater cables in the Baltic Sea have been damaged, one of which is in the Swedish economic zone off the southern tip of Öland. According to the Finnish owner, the state-owned company Cinia, it is a total cable break, likely caused by external influences.
The Swedish investigation is handled by the national operational department, Noa. The crime classification is currently sabotage, but this may change, the police write on their website.
The case is being prosecuted by the National Unit against International and Organized Crime, RIO.
“The police authority is following the situation, evaluates and assesses new information on an ongoing basis to determine whether we need to take action. The Police Authority has requested assistance from the Coast Guard and the Swedish Defense Forces to obtain and share information on the maritime situation. The Police Authority cooperates with other relevant authorities, including the Security Police, and also has a very good international cooperation “, the police write.
The public is also urged to “take advantage of verified information from authorities and not to spread unconfirmed information”.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius states that from the German side based on sabotage:
– No one believes that these cables broke in an accident. We have to assume, without having certain knowledge, that it is sabotage, he says.
The Ministry of Defense in Sweden confirms that Swedish authorities are investigating the events and exchanging information with allies. The armed forces are also following developments closely.
