Centerpartiet's leader Muharrem Demirok is facing a growing internal crisis. After trying to gather the party behind Magdalena Andersson as prime ministerial candidate, he meets strong opposition within the party board.

– It is a very deep crisis of confidence that he finds it difficult to get out of, says an anonymous source who is said to have access to the party to Expressen.

Muharrem Demirok presented four points at a recent party board meeting, where, according to several sources, he was in practice seeking a mandate to stand behind Magdalena Andersson before the 2026 election. The petition must have had been unannounced and without anchoring with the party's deputy chairman, which caused irritation. Despite a vote that Demirok won, sources describe the process as confused and problematic.

The criticism of the S leader is not only about his choice of line, but also about his leadership. The party is deeply divided in terms of its political strategy, according to Expressen.

– He has used up large parts of his trust capital. I think it will be incredibly difficult for him after this. The trust is simply not there, says “a central representative” to Expressen.

At the same time, some defend Muharrem Demirok and believe that the party has no other realistic alternative than to stand behind a left-wing bloc.

Neither do the critics want to replace the party leader, as Muharrem is Turkish.

“Deposing the party's first leader with an immigrant background in the way that some now seem to want, is also considered by several to be indefensible”, writes Expressen.
