Timothy Michael Scouton served as the presiding judge during the election in part of Minnesota and is accused for accepting votes from unregistered voters.
According to local authorities, Scouton allegedly allowed 11 people to vote without first properly registering, which is against election rules.
Instead of using the mandatory registration forms, he instructed his colleagues to have voters write their names on the back of a book. This despite the fact that Scouton underwent election judge training earlier this year.
The Hubbard County Sheriff's Office confirms that Scouton has been arrested but that he declined to give any explanation.
Minnesota's secretary of state calls the charges “extremely serious” and emphasizes the importance of election judges following the law to maintain public trust.
Electoral fraud is a charged topic in the United States, especially during an election year characterized by political polarization.
