The patient sought emergency care for a wound on the foot. An X-ray showed suspected bone infection, and treatment was started with antibiotics and a cast splint pending a cast boot.
However, according to the investigation, the casting was not performed correctly, and follow-up was delayed. Proper wound care was also not provided, which led to the wound getting worse and eventually requiring amputation.
After the investigation, Region Västerbotten has taken measures to reduce the risk of similar events in the future. The incident has also been reported to IVO, which reviews the case according to lex Maria.
Lex Maria is a law that requires care providers to report serious care injuries or risks of such to IVO. The aim is to strengthen patient safety and improve the quality of care by learning from mistakes.
