The Social Democrats' draft party program for the 2025 congress shows a clearly tightened line about immigration.
The party now emphasizes the importance of a strict migration policy combined with clear measures to improve so-called integration and reduce segregation in society.
– Sweden has changed in recent decades. Society has retreated and politics has relinquished control over social development. In order to face the societal problems, one must dare to say it like it is and put forward a policy to do what is required, says Magdalena Andersson in a press release.
“We want a generous and regulated immigration”, it was said when S last adopted a new party program in 2013. According to the new program, the party is instead a “strict Swedish migration policy” and “greater demands that everyone in Sweden learn Swedish” .
S proposes a migration policy that will balance humanitarian needs with Sweden's ability to offer “integration”. The focus is on ensuring that those who come to Sweden have the opportunity to quickly learn Swedish, establish themselves in the labor market and become part of the community.
The party also wants to limit labor immigration to industries where there is a real labor shortage. This is to avoid exploitation and strengthen labor market conditions. It is also proposed that richer municipalities should accept more so-called refugees than others.
The program describes how a lack of “integration” has led to socio-economic and ethnic divides as well as the emergence of parallel societies in certain areas. S points to the importance of strengthening language teaching, labor market measures and housing policy to break segregation. Living in areas with a high proportion of Swedish speakers is seen as a central part of the integration process.
In order to participate fully in the community, stricter requirements for language skills and active community participation are proposed. At the same time, the party wants to increase support for children and young people in so-called vulnerable areas, with investments in school and leisure activities.
Otherwise, S is sticking to its old demand to abolish the monarchy.
p>The party's line will be debated before the congress in Gothenburg in 2025, where the final party program will be determined.
