The men in the 136 investigations are now facing imminent negotiations in the district court after a toughening of penalties in the Act on the purchase of sex, which came into force in August 2022.

– An exceptionally large number of men have been identified during an operation which only took place over four evenings, says Simon Häggström of the Stockholm city police, who led the operation.

During the operation, social workers from the city of Stockholm also participated who, in addition to the police's repressive measures, could “offer conversational therapy with the aim of breaking a destructive behaviour”, the police write on their website.

The methods of catching sex buyers have developed as the punishment for buying sex has been tightened. The crimes are now attacked both through physical surveillance and investigative work.

The police write on their website that the new and refined method is based, among other things, on “mutual trust between the criminal suspect and the police”, i.e. between the police and the prostituted women .

– The police must contribute to the cultural shift that needs to be made in society around the purchase of sex. To deal with this type of crime, a change in behavior is needed on the part of a great many citizens, which our efforts clearly show, says Annika Laestadius, acting police area manager for the city police area, on the police's website.
