In just two years, the Aladdin's box price has increased by 61 percent, from an average of 71 kroner during Christmas 2022 to SEK 114 in November 2024, according to statistics from the Food Price Survey.

The price increase is largely explained by rising world market prices for cocoa, which has suffered from harvest problems in producer countries such as Ghana and the Ivory Coast.

Last winter, Matpriskollen warned of rising chocolate prices, but it is only now that the effects are really visible in stores.

“We are now starting to see the effects of the price increases on cocoa last year,” writes Ulf Mazur, CEO of Matpriskollen, in an email to Expressen.

The prices of Aladdin boxes vary between stores. Lidl offers the lowest price tag of SEK 59, while ICA is the highest at SEK 134.

The price increase for chocolate is wider than just Aladdin – Marabou's 200-gram chocolates have also risen, from SEK 24 a year ago to SEK 32 kroner, an increase of 31 percent.

According to Ulf Mazur, the differences in price increases between different chocolate products may be due to variations in cocoa and sugar content as well as different raw material contracts between producers.
