At first the attack led to the decision to put the page in so-called static mode, which makes it safe against most forms of overload. But it also means that news cannot be updated in the meantime.
However, this particular attack was so extensive that Fria Tider's servers were overloaded despite the static mode, which is a consequence of new rules that Google introduced in 2018.< /p>
– It is about the fact that all websites in practice must be encrypted today, even news websites where encryption is completely unnecessary. It requires more system resources and makes it much easier for an attacker to overload a website, says Fria Tider's publisher Widar Nord.
There are large, distributed systems that offer protection against ddos attacks, such as Google, Cloudflare and Amazon rent out.
– But it's stupid to depend on liberal companies that shut people down all the time. So we continue with our own infrastructure and expand it if this becomes a recurring problem, says Widar Nord.
