The State Council group is to task authorities with collecting information about people who are in Sweden without permission.
The Tax Agency has recently estimated that between 107,000 and 185,000 people may be in Sweden without registration, excluding around 50,000 who are deemed to be temporarily in the country.
– I don't think it is unreasonable to estimate that hundreds of thousands of people live in Sweden without a permit, says Migration Minister Johan Forssell to Dagens Nyheter.
The minister criticizes the protests directed against the debated inquiry into the duty of information for public employees and authorities . He believes that many of those who live in the so-called shadow society, including children, are at risk of being exploited and forced to live in difficult conditions.
Protests have flared up from trade unions and opposition parties who warn that a possible so-called whistleblowing could negatively affect teachers and healthcare staff. Forssell, however, dismisses the concept of a whistleblowing law and points out that there is no ready proposal yet.
The article itself in DN is strongly biased with the tear-jerking headline “The government steps up the hunt for the undocumented”.
