Earlier in the evening Stoianoglo looked to be leading the election, but when 92 percent of the votes were counted, Maia Sandu won and secured victory by a narrow margin.
Maia Sandu, who is considered pro-EU, will thus continue her role as president – a victory that comes after the country recently voted for membership of the EU by a narrow majority.
– The pro-Russian forces that tried to defeat her with threats, lies and bribes have lost this time, says a lyrical Christofer Wendick, SVT's European correspondent.
Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk were among the first international leaders to congratulate Sandu.
“Let us hope that this trend will continue in the coming days and months in other countries as well,” writes Tusk.
