Finnish proposal: SEK 340,000 in grants for young mothers

Foreign. An investigation commissioned by the Finnish government suggests that women who have their first child before the age of 30 should receive a grant of 30,000 euros, equivalent to approximately 340,000 kroner.

The goal is to increase Finland's childbearing rate, which is the lowest in the Nordics and reached a historically low level of 1.26 children per woman in 2023. In comparison, Sweden's birth rate was 1.45, also a record low.

The proposal is part of an extensive list of 20 measures to increase the nativity. Among the proposed measures are also support for families, investment in couple relationships and improvements in childcare.

– It is important to think about all methods that can contribute to more people wanting to have children, says Anneli Miettinen who is head of research at the Folkpensionsanstalten FPA's research unit, to SVT.
