Swedish police helped the US put a hacker group there

Domestic. In an international operation, Operation PowerOFF, American authorities with the support of Swedish police among others have identified and prosecuted hackers and shut down several servers that were used in cyberattacks worldwide.

The police agency has had an important part in the collection of investigative critical information in Operation PowerOFF. In this way, Swedish police have contributed to the American authorities being able to identify and prosecute hackers from the Sudanese cybercriminal group Anonymous Sudan and to take down parts of their infrastructure.

The group is believed to be behind over 35,000 attacks over the course of a year time that caused a total of over one hundred million kroner in damage in the US alone, and has attacked authorities and sensitive infrastructure around the world. Among those affected are, for example, the FBI and the US Department of Defense.

In Sweden, Anonymous Sudan has drawn attention in recent years, among other things, for its extensive overload attacks directed at the majority of Swedish industries, for example against the aviation industry and the financial sector.

In the international operation, several crackdowns have been made to shut down Anonymous Sudan's infrastructure, including servers and accounts with source code for the digital tools used in the cyber attacks.
