The two centres, located east and north-west of Tirana, will receive up to 3,000 illegal immigrants “rescued” by the Italian coast guard at sea.

The asylum applications of the immigrants will be handled by Italian staff on the ground in Albania, before a decision is made whether they can stay in Italy or be deported to their home countries.
