The proposal, which presented last week, faces strong opposition within the Liberals. Several members question whether it goes against the Liberals' fundamental values of individual freedom, Aftonbladet reports.

The Riksdag member Anna Starbrink expresses concern about opinion registration and believes that it would be “completely unreasonable”.

– The state cannot start recording what individuals think, she tells Aftonbladet.

Even municipal politician Rasmus Jonlund criticizes the proposal and believes that it goes against the Liberals' principles regarding the individual's right to freely think what they want. He also wonders who should decide what Swedish values are.

Johan Pehrson, the Liberal party leader, has defended the proposal and clarified that the aim is to understand immigrants' views on issues such as equality and children's rights. He emphasized during Sunday's party leader debate that the proposal does not involve a survey of individuals but that it should be done anonymously.
