The 52-year-old bank employee, identified as Vincenzo Coviello, has explained that his actions were motivated by “curiosity” and that he never stole money or charged down some documents.
In addition to Meloni and her sister Arianna, Italy's Defense Minister Guido Crosetto and Puglia's Governor Michele Emiliano are said to have been among those affected.
According to Corriere della Sera, the investigation began in August after that a local businessman discovered suspicious activity on his account and reported it to the police.
Further investigations revealed that Coviello independently accessed sensitive data. After the breach was discovered by a manager at the bank, Coviello was immediately fired.
