The American tradition of handing over the bride – that the bride is led to the altar by her father – has become more popular in Sweden in recent years, not least thanks to American film and television.
But many within the Social Democrats believe that the tradition meant a declaration of incompetence by the woman and is an expression of patriarchal oppression, and through a motion from the member Sara Waldenfors (S) it was intended that the Church of Sweden would be prohibited from performing weddings in that way.
When the question of introducing a ban was tried by the church meeting, but the answer was a resounding no, reports Dagen.
Both S and Sara Waldenfors now state that they respect the decision that bride handover will be allowed in the future as well.
