Stora Hammar is located on the edge of Höllviken in southwestern Scania, in an area dense with ancient remains. The site, located amidst fertile clay soils and close to meager beach lands, a stone's throw from Foot Bay, was an excellent area to settle in ancient times.

Now new housing will be built in the area and an archaeological excavation will be carried out in October. What the archaeologists, SHM, will investigate are a number of settlement remains that have been interpreted as longhouses, a four-post shed and pits, hearths and postholes that are several thousand years old. They date to the Pre-Roman Iron Age–Roman Iron Age, around 500 BC. to AD 400.

Near the research area there used to be a large settlement from the Iron Age where close to 50 pole houses stood during prehistoric times.

– This site we are investigating this year is probably the continuation of the building complex right next door that was excavated more than 10 years ago. We are at the easternmost edge of the settlement, says Fredrik Strandmark at the Archaeologists.

Several exciting finds were made on the adjacent surface, including metal objects in the form of buckles, a pendant or fittings in the form of a head that dated to the Viking Age (circa 800–1050 AD), buckles (buckles) from the early Middle Ages and into historical times (circa 1050–1500), ceramics from several different time periods and a glass shard from the Migration Period (circa 400–550 AD). Kr.).

The archaeologists now hope that the investigation this autumn will provide new knowledge about the history of the place and about the people who lived there.

– It is a very exciting environment, if you look at the view a little, with many older communication routes that have passed right by the area. For example, we have remains of a road that can be seen on older map material. It is a communicatively favorable and very strategic place that is close to the sea, says Fredrik Strandmark.
