Telegram begins releasing user data to authorities

Foreign. Messaging app Telegram will from now on release users' phone numbers and IP addresses to authorities upon valid requests. This is announced by CEO Pavel Durov, who was recently arrested in France.

In a post on Telegram, Pavel Durov explains that the new policy is being introduced to deter criminals from using the app's search function for illegal activities, such as selling prohibited goods.

In addition to the new privacy rules, Telegram has started using AI-based technology to identify and remove illegal content in the app's search function. In addition, the platform has recently updated its guidelines for moderating private chats to further strengthen security.

Telegram plans to report the release of user data to authorities in its quarterly so-called transparency report.
